Giovanni Ludovico
I nspired by the great wine producers and wines that have laid out the blueprint of winemaking globally, Giovanni, at the age of thirty, decided to transform his dream of producing wine into a reality, and to undertake studies in viticulture and oenology in the city of Bologna, a city in which he had lived and worked for ten years.
Aware of having come from a town which is strongly associated with the production of Primitivo, namely Sava, he decided to commit himself exclusively to this variety, and principally to the biotype historically present in this area. The idea was to create a great red, remarkably elegant and with maximum longevity; a wine which reflected the identity of the land, and which could excite the senses.
Giovanni started his zoning study across Sava with the aim of finding the best possible plots of land with the ideal characteristics for the variety. He identified four pieces of land with a total surface area of 2.09 hectares, containing 50 year old ‘alberelli’ (head trained bush vines), grown on red soil and located in the most renowned district of Sava. This presented him with an opportunity to acquire an important ampelographic and anthropological legacy, cultivated by the men of ancient times. It is the result of their labour and sacrifice, and of the love for those vines and that land, and the traditions of those places.
Experimentation started immediately in 2015. Giovanni proceeded with studies and trials, eventually refining his technique and style in 2017
The following year, seeing the encouraging results of his experimentation, he decided to make a return to his hometown, and immerse himself completely in the project.
The following year, seeing the encouraging results of his experimentation, he decided to make a return to his hometown, and immerse himself completely in the project. The year of 2018 though, was characterised by difficult weather conditions, and revealed itself not to be too favourable, for the most part, to Italian vines and winemaking. Therefore, Giovanni decided to wait for the following year to realise his dream, and so ‘Primitivo Vecchio Vigne 2019’ was born, entering the market in November 2021.
